List of good, free games

6 posts in this topic

There's a ton of free online games out there that aren't complete shit, so I thought I'd attempt to make a list of my personal favorites. Feel free to add more.

First Person Shooters

Sauerbraten

Sauerbraten is a online/offline first person shooter that features extensive game modes, low lag (I play it online frequently, and I have 56k dialup), and my favorite: Multiplayer online coop map editing, all in real-time.

It's extremely fast-paced, I'd compare it to Doom/Quake. My favorite gametype is all snipers, instagib. You've gotta give it a try, especially the map editing. Offline play is a bit of a joke, though it can be fun too.

It is based on the Cube II game engine, and is still being regularly updated and developed. I also highly recommend the Solaras HUD GUNS mod, found here: http://quadropolis.us/node/1201

Nexuiz

Nexuiz is a online/offline first person shooter that is extremely comparable to Quake/Unreal Tournament. Great lighting effects and graphics, and interesting weapons. Offline bots are quite a challenge on the higher difficulties.

Been downloaded over 1.5 million times since its first release in 2005, it is still being regularly updated and developed.

Assault Cube

Assault cube is a online first person shooter comparable to counterstrike, and is based on the original Cube engine. Pretty fun, low-lag game.

Real Time Strategy

Warzone 2100

Warzone 2100 is, simply, amazing. Think of a RTS-type game, such as command and conquer. Now, replace Tiberium with Oil for your main income, and give it a massive tech tree. I mean MASSIVE.

First off, you design your own tanks. Yeah. That's right. You pick a turret, a body, and a propulsion method, such as tracks, wheels, etc. How badass is THAT shit?

Now, back to the tech tree. It has over 400 different technologies. This game is HUGE.

Highly recommended. Challenging singleplayer as well.

Soldat

Soldat needs to be mentioned here. Online/offline platform shooter with many game modes and custom maps. It's pretty damn fun, my personal favorite next to Sauerbraten. One of those games you just have to try.

You have a list of guns to pick from at the start of the game, and whenever you die and respawn. Aim with mouse, move with WASD, and shoot with left mouse. Oh yeah, right mouse is a JETPACK. This is some fun shit.

Armagetron

Best Tron lightcycle clone. Ever.

Not that they're nearly on the same level but I used to play the games on Kongregate all the time.
