well you should get one from your host

so if you own thelostraven.com and want an e-mail service from it, your hosting should be able to supply you with an @thelostraven account

WHY DOOJOO ASK

I'm looking at buying some server space and a domain until I get around to buying a server itself.

Is there a site that tells you when a domain name expires.

When I was researching cheep hosters to host the ROTMSE search engine I ended up going with HostGator and haven't had any problems thus far. There was something I didn't like about DreamHost. I would have to say that my favorite hosting company is Liquid Web. http://www.liquidweb.com/datacenter/fullvideo.htm but they're in a different class altogether.

Is there a site that tells you when a domain name expires.

The way you check when a domain name was created and expiring is by looking up its whois information.

So you're looking to register a domain name with an .ru extension? Most major hosting providers only allow the common ones such as .com, .net, .org, etc... You'll have to gather a list of hosting providers that allow the .ru extension and then research which is the best. I did a quick search and found: http://www.best-hosting.net/domain/domain_ru.asp

Oh, well its the same concept for the registration of any foreign domain name.

Although I just googled around a bit and found some very interesting information: http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum32/398.htm

I found this site and don't think they require you to live in Japan to register a .jp domain name. http://www.jp-domains.com/
